My son spotted the pirate on the cover and demanded we read it immediately—the mix of neighbours (a cook, a ghost!) kept him guessing until the very last page. The hardcover is sturdy enough for his eager page-turning, and Donaldson's rhymes make it a joy to read aloud.

We've read this at bedtime three nights in a row now, and the pirate and ghost neighbours are a huge hit with my five-year-old. The hardcover is sturdy enough to survive his eager page-turns, and Julia Donaldson's rhythm makes it a joy to read aloud.

My four-year-old giggles every time we get to the ghost neighbour, and the hardcover pages have held up well against her excited page-turning. It's a charming read, though I wish the story was just a bit longer for bedtime.
